Funchal, Madeira
March 21st. After 8 days at sea we docked in Funchal, Madeira at 8:00am on a bright sunny day. We left the Prinsendam after breakfast at 9:15 am and decided to walk the half mile into town along the new promenade even though a shuttle bus was provided. We ventured past the church and strolled the narrow streets until we came to the market, with it’s flowers, vegetables and fish stalls. After a day at sea we landed on the island of Madeira. We docked in Funchal the Capital, where we decided to visit the Madeira Botanical Garden. The garden is situated up on a hillside. To get there we walked into town along the new waterfront promenade to the Cable car to Monte. We proceeded to take the cable car up to Monte. At Monte we walked over to another cable car which took us over and down to the Botanical Garden. We spent all morning viewing the various levels of the garden. We arrived in Funchal after 1 day at sea. Today we took the shuttle bus into town and proceeded to the cable car on the other side of town. We took the cable car up to the town of Monte where we went into the church and explored the different vistas along the trails. We then returned to Funchal in the cable car and started to explore the streets when we found out that the annual street flower festival began that day.
