Our 2012 62 Grand Voyage to the Med & Black Sea

Horta, Azores, Portugal

Sunday May 6, 2012 found us anchored in between the islands of Pico and Faial in the Azores. Our port of call was Horta on the island of Faial, where we had to tender into the marina. Arriving on shore we headed toward the South end of the town, along Rua Vasco da Gama to the Fort of Sao Sebastiao. We then headed North past the Church of Nossa Senhora das Angustias, the Fort of Santa Cruz and the Convent of Sao Francisco. Ponta Delgada, Azores, Portugal

May 5, 2012 found us in the Azores on the Island of São Miguel in the port of Ponta Delgada. It was an overcast day and rain was forecasted, so we started out with our umbrellas ready. We left the cruise terminal, situated right in town, and walked up the hill to the Mercado (Market). From there we strolled Rua dos Mercadores to the City Gates, the Court House and Matriz São Sedastião (Church). Obidos, Portugal

We started to sail up the Tagus River around 9:00 AM on May 2, 2012 on a very rainy, windy and overcast day. We docked in Lisbon on the other side of the April 25th Bridge. We decided to stay on board today due to 40 mile per hour winds and intermittent rain squalls. The next day was still overcast but the wind had subsided. We boarded a bus for a 90 minute ride to Obidos, known as the “Wedding Present Town” because it was a gift King Dinis gave to Queen Isabel on their wedding day in 1282. Tangier, Morocco

On May 1, 2012 we left the Mediterranean and arrived in Tangier, Morocco. Today we had a tour that took us over the Rif Mountains for views of the Atlantic and then to Cap Spartel, a point where the Mediterranean and Atlantic meet. We then rode to Hercules’ Cave, a grotto, where the cave was filled with all sorts of vendors & crafts. On our way back to Tangier, we stopped at The Hotel Ahlen, for a refreshment. Málaga, Spain

After a day at sea we docked in Málaga, Spain on April 30, 2012. Our mooring was at the entrance to the harbor and gave us a beautiful panoramic view of the city surrounded by its mountains. We started the day by walking past the Paseo de los Curas (waterfront sidewalk) to the Plaza de Toros (bull ring). From there we walked down Paseo de Reding to the Gardens of Pedro R. Alonso and the City Hall. At City Hall, we boarded the Málaga Tour HOHO bus. Valencia, Spain

We docked in Castellón de la Plana, Spain, a maiden call for our ship, on April 28, 2011. Our tour was to the City of Valencia, about an hour away through many orange groves and small farms. Arriving in Valencia we started with a panoramic drive around the ultramodern Arts and Science area which is built on the old river bed that runs through the city. We then proceed through the old part of the city to the highlight of the trip the Mercado Central de Valencia, one of the largest and oldest produce markets in Europe.
