2017 Grand World Voyage

On January 4, 2017, we embarked on a 111 day around the world voyage visiting 37 ports in 24 countries on 5 continents.During this time we traveled  34,022 miles.  We traveled on Holland American Line’s ms Amsterdam, a 62,735 gross tonnage ship (small by todays standards) with a passenger capacity of 1380, This ship was large enough to be comfortable yet small.enough to get into some of the more remote places that we went to. We divided this voyage into segments, with each segment having its own page to explore.

We started our Grand Voyage leaving Ft. Lauderdale at 10pm on January 4th, 2017 sailed to Santa Marta, Columbia. From Santa Marta we traversed the Panama Canal and then headed north docking in the ports of Puntarenas, Costa RicaCorinto, Nicaragua and  Antigua, Guatemala. We continued north to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico and San Diego, California. From San Diego, we headed west to Hawaii docking in Hilo and Honolulu.

On our second segment of our voyage we left Hawaii and headed west to Majuro on the Marshall Islands and then on to Guam. From Guam we headed north to Japan where we visited the ports of OsakaKyotoKagoshima, and Nagasaki. After our stay in Japan we headed to Korea where we docked in Incheon and from there we toured Seoul. We then proceed to BeijingShanghai and Zhujiajiao in China before ending this segment in Hong Kong.

Our third segment started in Vietnam, with the ports of Nha Trang and Vung Tau. After leaving Vietnam we traveled to Singapore for a 2 day stay and then off to Port Klang in Malaysia. The next stop was Colombo, Sri Lanka, where we went to Galle. After Sri Lanka we docked in India for an overnight in Mumbai. After crossing the Indian Ocean we arrived in Muscat, Oman, and traveled around the country for the day. Another overnight in Aquaba, the gateway to Petra and then we ended the segment by sailing through the Suez Canal.

Our final segment of this world voyage started in Rhodes Greece and then went for an overnight stay in Piraeus where we went to the Corinth Canal. We then traveled to 3 other ports in Greece, NafplionHeraklion on Crete and Mykonos. After leaving Greece we sailed to Valletta in Malta and then on to Spain with stops in MallorcaBarcelona for an overnight and Cadez where we went to Seville.  Our last two stops were in Morocco with a trip to Marrakech and finally the island of Madiera on our way across the Atlantic.
