After leaving Papeete at 5:30 am on January 24, 2016, we arrived and anchored in Opunohu Bay, in the island of Moorea at 8:00 am the same day. Today we took a four wheel drive tour of the island after tendering into Papetoai Village which was around a peninsula from where we were anchored. The trip started by going inland, through the Pineapple Fields, to the Opunohu Valley which is surrounded by all the major mountains of the island. After spending some time there, taking in the views, we went to the Belvedere Lookout, that over looks both main bays, Opunohu Bay on the left and Cooks Bay on the right split by Mt. Rotui. We then stopped at the Titroa Mare, the ruins of a large temple used by some of the original inhabitants of Moorea.
Our last stop was a climb to Magic Mountain for views of Pepetoai Village on the left and Opunohu Bay on the right. We sailed out of Moorea at 5:00 pm, passing the Hilton Moorea Resort with its’ stilted over the water bungalows and the small houses along the shoreline. The final view of the island was truly a spectacular sight.
