Nuku Hiva, French Polynesia

Nuku Hiva, French Polynesia

We spent 8 days at sea before we anchored off the island of Nuku Hiva in French Polynesia on January 22, 2015. We took a tender into the town of Taiohae, where we were greeted by local musicians, a conch shell blower and a greeter offering plumeria flowers. We then took a tour up and through the Taipivai Valley. On the top of the mountain there was an amazing view of Taiohae Bay and the Amsterdam anchored below. We then crossed the mountain and got another spectacular view, this time of a black sand beach. From there we descended down the mountain past some ceremonial houses and a countryside church to Hooumi Beach with its small craft market.

We returned to Taiohae to visit the Notre Dame Cathedral with its intricate wood carvings. We ended our trip with a visit to the Piki Vehine Archeological site, with many stone tikis on display.
