Arrecife, Lanzarote, Canary Islands

On November 11th, we visited our last port in the Canaries, Arrecife on the island of Lanzarote. We decided to take the shuttle bus into Arrecife and walk around the town. The town partially encircles a lagoon where the local fisherman moor their small boats. On the ocean side is a castle which sits out on a narrow strip of land. The town its self consists of typical stucco and lava rock buildings as well as some modern ones.   Lagoon of San Ginés Lagoon of San Ginés Lanzarote Architectural Style Iglesia San Ginés Typical Arrecife Street Parque Jose Ramirez Cerda Castle of San...

Las Palmas, Gran Canaria

Today was a new Canary Island for us therefore we decided to take an 8 hour tour which covered most of the highlights of the island. We started out and took the main highway from Las Palmas to Maspalomas. At Maspalomas, we went to the Riu Hotel to see the sand dunes on the south side of the island. From there we traveled north up a ravine to San Bartolome and stopped at a lookout Mirador de Tunte for some spectacular views. We then continued to a high look out where we could  see Mt. Teide on the island of Tenerife. Besides the views there were flocks of sheep grazing in the high meadows. We...

Today was another mild sunny day. We docked in Santa Cruz on the island of Tenerife where we had to take a shuttle bus as the terminal was under construction. Once in town we went to the main Plaza (Plaza España) and from there we went to the main tram station to take the 45 minute ride to La Laguna, the original capital of the island. In La Laguna we walked around the old town with its impressive 17th & 18th century churches, homes and palaces. After touring La Laguna we returned to Santa Cruz checking out the Mercado before returning to the ship. Maasdam in Santa Cruz de Tenerife Santa...

Lanzarote, Canary Islands

Today’s adventure took us to the Timanfaya National Park to view the volcanic landscape. We left the port of Arrrecife and headed to the national park, where our first stop was a camel ride up the slopes of a volcano cone. After the ride we went to the grape growing region to see the grapes growing in lava depressions. We then proceeded to the national park demo area where geothermal activity can be observed. Our bus then took us on the “Road of the Volcanoes” to view this lunar like landscape.   Route of the Volcanos Route of the Volcanos Route of the Volcanos Route...
