Papeete, Tahiti, French Polynesia

We docked in Papeete on the morning of January 24, 2015, at noon. It was quite cloudy when we arrived. During lunch the weather improved so we ventured out and after passing the welcome singers we ventured to the town market. Being Saturday after 1pm, when the market usually closes, only the craft and flower vendors were open, probably because of the cruise ships in town. We returned to the ship and went to see the Polynesian BBQ on the Lido Deck around the pool. This was the first of several outdoor food events that are held on the World Voyage. In the evening there was a local folkloric...

Nuku Hiva, French Polynesia

We spent 8 days at sea before we anchored off the island of Nuku Hiva in French Polynesia on January 22, 2015. We took a tender into the town of Taiohae, where we were greeted by local musicians, a conch shell blower and a greeter offering plumeria flowers. We then took a tour up and through the Taipivai Valley. On the top of the mountain there was an amazing view of Taiohae Bay and the Amsterdam anchored below. We then crossed the mountain and got another spectacular view, this time of a black sand beach. From there we descended down the mountain past some ceremonial houses and a...

Bora Bora, French Polynesia

On January 29, 2014 we sailed into the lagoon in Bora Bora and dropped anchor. We had just been here in February of 2013 (see Bora Bora 2013), so we took in the town of Vaitape, which is where the ship’s tenders dock. As soon as we got off the tenders we were greeted by welcome singers on the pier in front of the craft market. The craft market featured shell jewelry and black pearls. Leaving the craft market, we proceeded to Main Street, passing some local produce vendors on our way to the Protestant church. We then turned around and went by some local souvenir and black pearl shops....

Moorea, French Polynesia

After spending overnight in Papeete, we traveled a distance of 22 miles and anchored at Opunohu Bay at 7:00 AM in Moorea. To get on the island we had to take a 15 minute tender ride to shore and landed in Papetoai, where the octagonal Papetoai Temple is located. Once on shore we took a tour of the island with our first stop being Belvedere Lookout with views of the island, it’s mountains and the coast. We then proceeded to circumnavigate the island. On of our stops, Ia Ora viewpoint, we saw one of the iconic resorts with huts that are on stilts in the water.  From there we went to a...

Papeete, Tahiti

On January 27, 2014 we docked in Papeete, Tahiti, the first of 3 islands in French Polynesia. Since we were here on February 28, 2013 (See: Papeete Tahiti in 2013), we decided to tour the town of Papeete, which is right outside the pier. When you leave the ship you are greeted by singers on the pier. When you leave the port there is a very nice welcome center and craft market, with local singers and dancers performing throughout the day. After leaving the welcome center we went to Le Marche, the municipal market. This market has crafts, flowers, produce, fish and meat and is always active....
