Auckland, New Zealand (Day 1)

After leaving Tonga we arrived in Auckland, New Zealand on February 5, 2015. The ship docks next to the Ferry Terminal, in downtown Auckland. To explore the city we rode on the Hop on Hop off bus which takes you to all the major attractions in the city. We enjoyed the native brick and colonial architecture that was seen throughout the city. At the Aukland Museum there is a wonderful collection of Maori crafts and carvings including a Maori meeting house and canoe. Wellington, New Zealand

Our final stop in New Zealand was the Capitol City of Wellington on February 23, 2013. Today we spent the morning taking a 4 wheel drive “Seal Coast Safari”. We boarded a 9 passenger 4X4 Toyota Land Cruiser and traveled through Wellington and proceeded up  to the ridge behind the town where we stopped for a panoramic view of the city. We continued over the ridge and down the other side to the coast. We then traveled along the rugged coast to Tongue Point and the Leaning Lighthouse, where we stopped at the fur seal colony. Napier, New Zealand

On February 22, 2013, we found ourselves in the port of Napier. Our tour took us out along a rugged coastline by 4X4 all terrain 20 passenger busses to Cape Kidnappers, the southern promontory in Hawks Bay, which is the home of a large Gannet Colony and nesting site. Here we were able to walk on the perimeter of the colony as we observed the 1,000s of birds and their young. Upon returning we took a tour down town Napier and its many Art Deco Buildings. Napier is known as “The Art Deco City” . Rotorua, New Zealand

We arrived in the Bay of Plenty and docked in the port of Tauranga. Today we headed inland to the Town of Rotorua, where we visited the Te Puia Thermal Reserve. This site included Geysers, Mud Pools, Steam Vents as well as a Maori Model Village and a Native Craft Center. We then went into the town of Rotorua and took an aerial gondola up Mount Ngongotaha, where we had lunch with spectacular views of  Lake Rotorua. Auckland, New Zealand

On February 20, 2012 we reached New Zealand and docked in downtown Auckland,the city of sails. From the ship we had a great view of the city including the Ferry Terminal the hub of harbor activity and the  Sky Tower. We ventured into the countryside and passed many sheep farms and cattle ranches on our way to Maori Bay, home to large Gannet Colony. After viewing the surfers and scenery of the bay and the colony we traveled to a local farm called Haumoana. Here we had lunch, and tour the farm with its herds of Fallow Deer and Sheep.
